 2022 Preview

South Lamar finished the 2021 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year South Lamar just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 1A region six with a 3-4 region record.

The Stallions would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 4-16 record. Since 2010, South Lamar has gone a combined 61-73. Their 45.5% winning percentage ranks 29th in Class 1A over the past twelve seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, South Lamar has managed to compile a record of 145-137. Their 51.0% winning percentage ranks 23rd in Class 1A and 176th in the AHSAA.

The Stallions are led by head coach Clay Gilliam who is entering his seventh season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 42-28 over the past six seasons at South Lamar. Under his direction the Stallions have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have won one region crown with Coach Gilliam.

Coach Gilliam's overall record as a head football coach in six season stands at 42-28 (60.0%).

The South Lamar Stallions will play in Class 1A region five during the 2022 season. Following realignment, the Stallions remain in 1A but move from region six over to region five. The Stallions have one of the toughest schedules in Class 1A. Their opponents had a combined record of 53-47 last season. That ranks 9th in Class 1A and 131st in the AHSAA.

With a little luck and some improvement, the Stallions could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region five this season. South Lamar missed the playoffs the past couple of seasons but hope to return to the post season in 2022.

The Stallions open the 2022 season at home against non-region opponent Lamar County on Friday, August 19 at J.C. McAdams Field. Last year the Lamar County Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in third place in Class 2A region five. The Bulldogs lost in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs to Tanner by a score of 35-27.

South Lamar and Lamar County have met a total of 39 times on the football field. The Stallions have a 20-19-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2021 with Lamar County winning by a score of 27-0.
